Das Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes ist es die besonderen Themen, Perspektiven und Aufgaben einer in Israel praktizierten Germanistik zu untersuchen und vorzustellen. Schon der Titel "Spuren der Schrift" verweist darauf, dass die Schwerpunktsetzung die jüdische Komponente der deutschen Literatur ist. Zugleich aber geht es auch um eine Erweiterung der Germanistik. Die deutsche und deutsch-jüdische Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte soll gegen den Strich der üblichen Deutungsschemata gelesen werden und das Verhältnis von Theorie und historischer Erfahrung im Rahmen der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur und Wissenschaft neu bestimmt werden. Dies stellen die hier versammelten Beiträge auf vier unterschiedliche Arten vor: Teil I widmet sich der Geschichte sowie den aktuellen Rahmenbedingungen einer Germanistik in Israel . Teil II untersucht die Möglichkeit der Entwicklung einer aus der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur selbst hervorgehenden Perspektive auf Literatur, und zwar auf jede Art von Literatur. Teil III diskutiert die allgemeine Frage des Bandes nach einer Germanistik in Israel an Fallbeispielen. Teil IV rückt die Sprache als ein Medium und Problem des Dichtens wie zugleich des philologischen Nachdenkens über Dichtung in den Mittelpunkt.
