Einer der grundlegenden und altesten Gedanken in der Ge- schichte der Physik besteht in der Vermutung, daB die unuber- sehbare Vielfalt der physikalischen Erscheinungen letzten Endes auf einige wenige Grundbausteine und Krafte reduziert werden .kanne. Heute bildet diese Annahme die Motivation fUr einen Zweig der Physik, der als "Elementarteilchenphysik" bezeichnet wird. Der Laie denkt bei diesem Stichwort im allgemeinen nur an den ersten Aspekt der genannten Idee: an die Reduktion der Materie- formen auf immer weniger und immer kleinere Grundbausteine. Er erinnert sich, daB aile natlirlich vorkommenden chemischen Verbindungen auf kaum 100 chemische Elemente zuruckzufUh- ren sind, deren kleinste Einheiten die Atome sind. Die Atome sind durchaus nicht unteilbar und strukturlos, sondern setzen sich aus Kern und Hullenelektronen zusammen. Der Kern seiner- seits ist aus noch kleineren Bausteinen gefugt, aus Proton en und Neutronen. Elektronen, Protonen und Neutronen sind die gelaufigsten Ver- treter der Gruppe der Elementarteilchen. Die Elementarteilchen tragen ihren Namen nicht ganz zu recht. Seit etwa zwei Jahr- zehnten weiB man namlich, daB die meisten von ihnen aus noch kleineren Objekten, den sag. Quarks, aufgebaut sind. Mit den Quarks ist allerdings die vorerst tiefste Strukturschicht der Mate- rie erreicht. Auch an den graBten Beschleunigeranlagen, den "Mikroskopen" der Elementarteilchenphysik, stellen sich die Quarks bis heute als punktfarmige Teilchen dar, ohne innere Struktur und raumliche Ausdehnung.
