Theorie gilt in der gebräuchlichen Forschung als ein Inbegriff von Sätzen über ein Sachgebiet, die so miteinander verbunden sind, dass aus einigen von ihnen die übrigen abgeleitet werden können.''1, konstatiert Max Horkheimer in seiner Schrift Traditionelle und Kritische Theorie und schreibt weiter:, Theorie ist das aufgestapelte Wissen in einer Form, die es zur möglichst eingehenden Kennzeichnung von Tatsachen brauchbar macht. ''2 Als Gegenstand historiographischer Rekonstruktionen und problemgeschichtlicher Erörterungen hat seine Kritische Theorie einen festen Platz in der akademischen Landschaft. Doch was versteht man genau unter der Kritischen Theorie? Durch welche Charakteristika grenzt sie sich von anderen Gesellschaftstheorien ab? Und was genau hat es mit den beiden Begriffen der Kulturindustrie und Massenkultur auf sich? Diese und andere Fragen sollen im Verlauf dieser Hausarbeit theoretisch untersucht werden. Dabei soll zunächst eine definitorische Eingrenzung des Begriffes der Kritischen Theorie erfolgen, sowie ein kurzer Abriss über die Entstehung des Terminus gegeben werden. Anschlie end wird zur besseren Einordnung kurz die Entstehungsgeschichte skizziert, ehe eine Abgrenzung zur Traditionellen Theorie vorgenommen werden kann. In diesem Kontext werden anschlie end die kritischen Überlegungen Horkheimers zur Traditionellen Theorie dargelegt, ehe man zu den Hauptcharakteristika der Kritischen Theorie übergehen kann. Nachdem auf Makroebene die Kritische Theorie im Sinne von Horkheimers und Adornos Schrift, Dialektik der Aufklärung'' ausführlich behandelt worden ist, erfolgt nun eine inhaltliche Spezifizierung auf das vierte Kapitel, Kulturindustrie -Aufklärung als Massenbetrug''.
