In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist er zu einem Magnet der Unterhaltungs- und Freizeitindustrie geworden, �ber den sich ganze Nationen definiert und identifiziert haben. Das j�ngste Beispiel ist hierzulande die Fu ballweltmeisterschaft, bei der die Zuschauerzahlen weltweit vor dem Fernseher oder auf den zahlreich aufgebauten Gro bildleinw�nden unvorstellbare Dimensionen einnehmen. Allein die Zuschauerzahlen in den Stadien sind rekordverd�chtig. So werden in den ausverkauften WM-Stadien insgesamt �ber drei Millionen Fans erwartet. Fu ball avanciert z. Zt. zu dem beherrschenden Thema in den Medien, das alle sonstigen Themen aus Politik und Gesellschaft in den Hintergrund dr�ngt. Am Tag des Er�ffnungsspiels der deutschen Nationalelf herrschte eine erwartungsfrohe Festtagsstimmung, wie sie h�chstens noch das Weihnachtsfest zu verbreiten im Stande ist. Auf vielen �ffentlichen Pl�tzen in St�dten und D�rfern sowie in Gastst�tten, Bierg�rten oder einfach zu Hause versammeltem sich riesige Menschenmassen, um das erste Spiel der Fu ballweltmeisterschaft im eigenen Lande zu verfolgen. Fu ball bewegt l�ngst nicht mehr nur die Emotionen von Millionen Menschen, im Fu ball selbst werden mittlerweile auch Millionenbetr�ge bewegt. Der gesellschaftliche Wandel im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts machte somit auch vor dem Fu ball nicht Halt. Als Ende Mai 1903 in Hamburg das erste Endspiel um die deutsche Fu ballmeisterschaft zwischen dem VfB Leipzig und dem DFC Prag stattfand, steckte der deutsche Fu ball noch in den Kinderschuhen. Etwa 2000 Zuschauer brachten damals umgerechnet 473 Mark Umsatz, w�hrend Fu ball in England bereits Volkssport war und die Stadien seit Jahren regelm� ig f�llte.
