Seit einigen Jahren rückt die Blockchain-Technologie immer mehr in den Fokus der Medien, der Unternehmen und sogar der Länder. Das Potenzial dieser neuen Technologie ist noch weitestgehend unbekannt. Dennoch lassen sich heute schon Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für die Gesellschaft und die Industrie finden. Mit Kryptowährungen kann weltweit anonym gehandelt werden, unabhängig von Staaten, Banken oder anderen Institutionen. Deshalb stehen sie immer öfter im Fokus der Politik und unter starker Kritik. Jedoch lassen sich mit Blockchains nicht nur digitale Währungen austauschen, sondern auch neue digitale Anwendungsfälle gestalten, die besonders im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung eine wichtige Rolle spielen könnten. Diese potentiell schnellere, autonome und dezentrale Anwendungen sind durch kryptographische Schlüssel gesichert. Von den Eigenschaften der Blockchain können Unternehmen, aber auch die Bevölkerung profitieren. Die Daten auf der Blockchain sind unveränderbar und offen einsehbar. Daher bieten sie einen hohen Grad an Sicherheit und Vertrauen in die digitale Welt, die es zuvor noch nicht gab. Die neue Technologie beeinflusst viele Bereiche der Wirtschaft, so auch die Energiewirtschaft in Deutschland. Aktuell befinden sich Deutschland und auch viele europäische Länder mitten in der Energiewende. Erneuerbare Energiequellen sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil davon. Atom- und Kohlekraftwerke werden abgebaut und Wind- und Solarparks aufgebaut. Zudem produzieren immer mehr private Haushalte ihre eigene Energie. Dadurch ändert sich die Energieversorgung von einem zentralen zu einem dezentralen Netz.
