O desenho técnico é um ramo especializado, definido por normas técnicas de representações gráficas submetidas as regras da geometria descritiva, como parte de conhecimento fundamental para a produção de atividades projetuais em disciplinas como a arquitetura, o design e a engenharia. É a ferramenta mais importante de um projeto, por ser o meio de comunicação entre quem projeta e quem executa, tendo como resultado final a fabricação de um produto. O início da concepção de desenho técnico era representado por traços, linhas e figuras geométricas que formavam, de maneira mais rudimentar e simples, projetos gráficos elaborados manualmente. Hoje, com o advento da tecnologia, é possível elaborar projetos de mais elevado grau de dificuldade com grau de máximo de precisão. Para isso, foi criado o sistema CAD (Computer Aided Design), ou seja, projeto assistido por computador.
