Weltkrieges entwickelte sich in dem neu gegründeten Königreich Jugoslawien eine neue jugoslawische Literatur. Durch die traumatischen Erlebnisse des Krieges beeindruckt sahen viele junge Künstler die Notwendigkeit einer neuen Kunstrichtung. Sie suchten nach einer Möglichkeit, die Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges und das Leben nach dem Krieg im Alltag auszudrücken. Die Manifeste der neuen literarischen Bewegungen der Avantgarde, die ganz Europa überfluteten, wurden von den jungen Künstlern dankbar angenommen. Die Gemeinsamkeit dieser Bewegungen lag in der Forderung nach einem Bruch mit der Tradition sowie deren sehr theoriebetonten Auftreten. Das Hauptanliegen der Avantgardisten war die Überwindung der Barriere zwischen Kunst und Leben. Die ersten avantgardistischen Versuche tauchten in den Regionen des ehemaligen österreichisch-ungarischen Staates auf. So erschien bereits 1909 ein Aufsatz in der Zeitschrift "Ljublanski zvon" über den Futurismus und Marinetti's Schule. 1913 präsentierte Dimitrije Mitrinovic in der Zeitschrift "Bosanska Vila" seine stark an den deutschen Expressionismus und den italienischen Futurismus angelehnte Idee einer neuen Kunst. Es entstanden eine Reihe kurzlebiger Zeitschriften wie "Savremenik", in der unter anderem Miroslav Krleza einige Werke veröffentlichte. Die erste Avantgarde-Zeitschrift war die Zeitschrift "Svetokret: List za ekspediciju na severni pol ljudskog duha"1, veröffentlicht von dem späteren Mitbegründer des Zenitismus Ve Poljanski. In Anlehnung an die deutsche Zeitschrift "Der Sturm" wurde von 1917 bis 1918 die Zeitschrift "Vijavica" und 1919 der "Juris" veröffentlicht.
