"Balseros" fue la primera novela de Ernesto Ochoa. Fue la primera novela que trató el tema del éxodo de cubanos en frágiles embarcaciones con destino a Estados Unidos. Con una narración sencilla, pero apasionada y desgarradora, la novela "Balseros" cuenta la historia de cuatro jóvenes cubanos asfixiados por un represivo sistema político-económico que no les deja espacio para las libertades individuales. Como único camino de salida los personajes deciden escapar de la isla a bordo de una balsa construida por ellos mismos. Se lanzan a una aventura donde la fuerza de voluntad, la resistencia y el valor se ponen a prueba a cada minuto. Esta travesía por el Estrecho de la Florida, repleta de peligros, imprevistos y enfrentamientos físicos y sicológicos, llevan al lector a comprender a fondo los verdaderos motivos que impulsan el sueño y las ansias de libertad de sus protagonistas. Sus personalidades se reflejan en todos los matices, ya sean de fidelidad y heroísmo o maldad y cobardía. Durante seis días y cinco noches los personajes se ven envueltos en un torbellino de emociones que van desde la euforia hasta el pánico pasando por la desesperación y la esperanza. Al final, cada uno se ve cara a cara con su destino. Esta novela está basada en una amplia investigación factual, entrevistas con participantes directos y sobrevivientes de experiencias de este tipo, además de testimonios de más de un centenar de balseros presos en diferentes cárceles de Cuba en la década de los años 80. En esta novela también se refleja la experiencia del autor en los preparativos de un intento de fuga de Cuba en balsa en la que estuvo envuelto a finales de los años 80. El autor la considera una "docu-novela".

Ernesto Ochoa Holguín, Cuba, 1958 Estudió Derecho en la Universidad de La Habana. Master of Arts de Filosofía por la Universidad Estatal Lomonosov de Moscú. En Cuba trabajo por breve tiempo como profesor de Filosofía en la Universidad de Matanzas, en la Oficina de Información y Documentación de los Centros de Estudios de Europa Occidental, Africa y Medio Oriente y en el Centro de Estudios de América. Emigró a Canadá en 1989. Trabajó como corrector de estilo y reportero para el periódico "Latin News" de Toronto. En 1991 se estableció en New York. Allí trabajo en el periódico "Noticias del Mundo" y en la cadena de televisión Telemundo como redactor, productor de proyectos especiales, productor de noticias, gerente editorial y productor ejecutivo. Desde el año 1998 reside en la Florida donde ha trabajado para las dos cadenas de Televisión hispanas mas importantes de Estados Unidos, Univisión y Telemundo. Actualmente es Productor de Noticias de Telemundo. En el año 1995 fundó la empresa América Mía, dedicada a la producción de materiales promocionales de destinos turísticos de America Latina en Estados Unidos.
