Barley is one of the oldest cereals grown in the world, and is important for human and animal nutrition. The peripheral layers (PL), a co-product used for chemical protection of the endosperm and germ, are an important source of micronutrients and offer numerous health benefits. Little work has been done on the structural composition of developing barley grain tissues.
