Bartleby The Scrivener is a short story written by Herman Melville. The story revolves around a lawyer who hires a new scrivener named Bartleby to help him with his work. Bartleby is initially a hard worker, but soon starts to refuse to do any task that he deems unnecessary or beyond his job description, stating his famous phrase ""I would prefer not to"". The lawyer tries to reason with Bartleby, but he remains stubborn and refuses to leave the office, even when the lawyer moves to a new location. The story explores themes of isolation, alienation, and the struggle for individuality in a capitalist society. The lawyer's attempts to understand Bartleby's behavior and his eventual decision to leave him alone in the office, despite his growing concern for his well-being, raises questions about the limits of empathy and the consequences of social detachment.
