Recenti studi epidemiologici e sperimentazioni cliniche suggeriscono un possibile ruolo di alcuni ceppi di batteri lattici (LAB) nella prevenzione delle malattie allergiche. In questo studio, abbiamo valutato il potenziale immunomodulatore di due ceppi di LAB, Lactococcus lactis e Lactobacillus plantarum, nella profilassi e nella terapia delle risposte immunitarie allergiche. Entrambi i ceppi LAB hanno indotto livelli elevati di IL-12 e IFN in colture di cellule di milza murina na�ve. La co-applicazione intranasale con Bet v 1 ricombinante, il principale allergene del polline di betulla, prima o dopo la sensibilizzazione allergica, ha portato ad un aumento dei livelli di anticorpi IgG2a specifici per l'allergene e della produzione di IFN in vitro, indicando uno spostamento verso risposte Th1. Il successo dell'immunomodulazione mediante il pretrattamento delle mucose � stato ulteriormente dimostrato dalla soppressione della degranulazione dei basofili indotta dagli allergeni. Concludiamo che questi ceppi LAB in combinazione con un allergene potrebbero essere candidati promettenti per la vaccinazione delle mucose contro l'allergia di tipo I.
