Welche Eigenschaften dieses Aufstandes lassen seine Einordnung als "Bauernaufstand" keineswegs zu? War Stepan Razin als Kopf der Erhebung ein "Bauernführer", der sich mit aller Macht gegen den Moskauer Staat erheben wollte? Diese und weitere Fragen sollen in der vorliegenden Arbeit beantwortet werden. Als die sogenannten "Bauernaufstände" ging die Reihe grö erer Aufstände im Russland des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts in die ältere Geschichtsschreibung ein. Dahinter verbarg sich der Versuch der sowjetischen Forschung, die vier herausragenden Erhebungen dieser Zeit in eine Linie der Kontinuität bis hin zur "gro en sozialistischen Oktoberrevolution" im Jahre 1917 zu zeichnen. Man versuchte, die Geschichte Russlands zu einer Geschichte von Volksaufständen umzudeuten, um den eigenen Vorsto , auf den sich ja der sowjetische Staat gründete, als folgerichtige und logische Konsequenz dazustellen. Angefangen beim Bolotnikow-Aufstand 1606-1607, wurden auch die Aufstände des Stepan Razin 1667-1671, des Kondratij Bulavin 1707-1708 und der Pugačev-Aufstand 1773-1775 in diese Chronologie eingeordnet. Es passte nur zu gut ins sowjetische Weltbild, dass es auch 17. und 18. Jahrhundert Volksaufstände gab, die man als "Bauernkrieg" in vier Etappen beschreiben konnte. Da das Proletariat als unterdrückte Klasse zu dieser Zeit noch lange nicht existent war, bediente man sich der Bauernschaft als vorrangigen Untersuchungsgegenstand.
