"Tah-hy!" I jerked my head up as I heard my name. "Tah-hy! They are coming!"

On June 17, 1877, gunshots marked the start of war--one that swept twelve-year-old Tah-hy (Chief Joseph's daughter) and her people into a harrowing journey across the American West. Relentlessly pursued, they endured multiple battles, cold, hunger, and death. Eventually, after months of exile and heartbreak, they began their path to a new way of life.

Based on actual events and narrated by Tah-hy's youthful voice, this biographical novel is intended for young adults, but will also interest older readers. The story presents many aspects of the Nez Perce Dreamer culture and reminds us of what was lost when they were overpowered and displaced.

2012 Idaho Book Award Honorable Mention from the Idaho Library Association.

Proferes, Jo: -

Artist Jo Proferes painted western images, including a series that highlighted Nez Perce perspectives and history. Created for exhibition by the tribe during America's Bicentennial celebration, the paintings show they had little to celebrate. In the late 1970s, the Idaho Statehouse and Spokane's Museum of Native American Cultures displayed the series. In the 1990s, PBS showcased several paintings in two documentaries: "America's Battlegrounds, '' and "Sacred Journey of the Nez Perce.''

Williams, Jack R.: -

Jack R. Williams studied Southwestern Archaeology at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, putting his education to good use during a thirty-year career in the National Park Service. In addition to his time with the Nez Perce people of Idaho, he was assigned to Chaco Canyon, Bandelier, Aztec Ruins, and Navajo National Monuments in New Mexico and Arizona. Williams is the author or co-author of numerous archaeology-related reports and articles, as well as a noted photographer.
