The book is set in the early 1800s and follows the story of Charles Beauchamp, a young lawyer from Virginia who moves to Kentucky to start a new life. In Kentucky, Beauchamp falls in love with a woman named Anna Cooke, but their relationship is opposed by her brother, a powerful politician named Colonel Sharpe. When Sharpe is found murdered, Beauchamp is accused of the crime and put on trial. The novel explores themes of love, honor, and justice, and depicts the social and political tensions of the time.
