This book brings to light the extraordinary visual legacy of this remarkable twentieth-century Japanese artist, Sadao Watanabe. Lavishly illustrated, half of the book features full page reproductions along with the passages from the Bible which inspired their creation. The rest of the book contains other works by Sadao Watanabe with essays by Sandra Bowden, I. John Hesselink, Makoto Fujimura, and John A. Kohan.

Sandra Bowden is a painter and printmaker living in Chatham, Massachusetts. With over one hundred one-person shows, her work is in many collections including the Vatican Museum of Modern Religious Art, the Museum of Biblical Art, and the Haifa Museum. She is also a passionate collector of religious art dating from the early fifteenth century to the present with a focus on Georges Rouault, Sadao Watanabe, and the German Expressionists. Bowden was president of CIVA Christians in the Visual Arts from 1993 to 2007.
Ira John Hesselink Jr. was an American theologian, born Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. An expert in John Calvin was Albertus C. Van Raalte Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan.
Makoto Fujimura graduated with a B.A. from Bucknell University, then studied in a traditional Japanese painting doctorate program for several years at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music with several notable artists such as Takashi Murakami and Hiroshi Senju. He is the director of the Brehm Center in Pasadena, California, an organization that aims to integrate Christianity and Art into an education at Fuller Theological Seminary, as well as a Senior Fellow at the Trinity Forum.
