Auf einer Wanderung in Mecklenburg im Jahre 1938 ist Andersch von der Landschaft und der Backsteingotik der Region fasziniert. In dem Roman, geschrieben 1957, verknüpft er die politische Situation der NS-Zeit mit Ernst Barlachs Plastik Lesender Klosterschüler, der zur "entarteten Kunst" zählt. Die Handlung findet im fiktiven Fischerort RERIK statt. Pfarrer HELANDER, in dessen Georgenkirche in WISMAR die Figur steht, will sie vor der Beschlagnahme retten. Der Kommunist Gregor begegnet der Figur und wandelt daraufhin sein Leben. Er lässt die Partei hinter sich und organisiert mit dem Parteifreund KNUDSEN und seinem JUNGEN die Flucht der Figur über das SALZHAFF nach Schweden. Gregor bezieht die vom Konzentrationslager bedrohte Jüdin JUDITH in seine Rettungsaktion mit ein. Das Buch mit Abbildungen von Barlachs Werken und einer Landkarte der fiktiven Handlungsorte gibt Einblick in die Struktur von Anderschs Roman, seinen Bezugswerken (Kurzgeschichte, Hörspiel, Gedicht) und zu zwei Verfilmungen des Romans. Vorgestellt werden Barlachs Werkmotive des Lesenden und seine Wege zur Backsteingotik. Dargestellt wird auch die aktuelle Diskussion um Anderschs Verhalten im Nationalsozialismus.
Friedhelm Niggemeier war mehr als 30 Jahre an der Gesamtschule in Fröndenberg als Lehrer tätig. Seine Fächerkombination Kunst, Deutsch und Sozialwissenschaften spiegeln sich auch in der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung wider, denn nur durch eine fachübergreifende Sichtweise lassen sich komplexe gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Verhältnisse nachvollziehen. Der Autor hat Aufsätze in Fachzeitschriften geschrieben und an Schulbüchern für das Fach Kunst und an Lehrplänen mitgearbeiet. Seine aktuelle Veröffentlichung im Schroedel-Verlag "Alfred Andersch, Sansibar oder der letzte Grund" (2010) enthält Materialien und Texte von Andersch und Barlach, die z.T. schwer zugänglich sind. Das Buch kann als eine sinnvolle Ergänzung der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung dienen.
