Saki's stories are beautifully varnished, taut pieces of writing resolving on a twist in the last sentence. They reflect the manners and attitudes of the Edwardian society, from the point of view of the sardonic insider and are at times marked by shades of black humour. This collection presents some of his most popular stories like 'The Open Window', 'The Hounds of Fate' and 'The Unrest Cure'.

Hector Hugh Munro was born in Akyab, Burma (Myanmar) on 18 December 1870. He was brought up by two maiden aunts in an atmosphere of severity and strictness, which left an indelible mark on his character and also shaped his stories. He wrote most of his best work for newspapers such as the Westminster Gazette, Bystander and The Morning Post. His columns and short stories were published under the pen name Saki, who was the cupbearer in the RubaiyatofOmar Khayyam. Munro died on 14 November 1916, in France.
