Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand wabrend meiner Tatigkeit als wissen- schaftlicher Assistent am Institut fUr Industrie und Fertigungswirtschaft der Universitat Linz. Es handelt sich urn die uberarbeitete Fassung meiner an dieser Fakultat eingereichten Habilitationsschrift. Die groBe Bedeutung der operativen Produktionsplanung und -steuerung bzw. der diese Aufgabe unterstiitzenden PPS-Systeme ist im heutigen wirtschaft- lichen Umfeld unbestritten. Nachdem die Planungskonzepte und -methoden dieser Systeme seit nunmehr 14 Jahren mein hauptsachliches Arbeitsgebiet bilden, sind mir die durch die Grenzen des heutigen Wissensstandes bedingten Planungsmangel im diesem Bereich gut bekannt. Durch die Beschaftigung mit dieser Problematik entstanden eine Reihe von Gedanken, in welche Richtung eine sinnvoHe Weiterentwicklung der PPS-Systeme gehen konnte. Soweit es mir bisher gelungen ist, diese Gedanken zu einer entsprechenden Reife zu entwickeln, mochte ich sie mit der vorliegenden Arbeit zur Diskussion stell en. Herzlich bedanken mochte ich mich vor aHem bei meinem akademischen Lehrer, Herrn o.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gunther Zapfel, fUr die fachliche und personliche Unterstiitzung meiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit und fUr die wichtigen Einblicke in zahlreiche wissenschaftliche FragesteHungen, die ich im Laufe unserer gemeinsamen Tatigkeit erhielt.
