Auch wenn sie nur ca. 0,001 % der gesamten Wassermenge des Planeten ausmacht, kommt der Bodenfeuchte eine herausragende Bedeutung für das Leben auf Erden zu. Ein Teil des im Boden gebundenen Wassers, die so genannte nutzbare Feldkapazität, steht der Vegetation für ihre Stoffwechselprozesse zur Verfügung (KUNTZE ET AL. 1994:234). Die zeitliche und räumliche Dynamik der Bodenfeuchte mit den Prozessen der Evaporation, Transpiration, Infiltration und Grundwasserneubildung ist für das Verständnis der lokalen Wasserkreisläufe von grö ter Bedeutung. Mit den konventionellen Messmethoden ist die Bodenfeuchte nur punktuell zu erfassen. Gro flächige Untersuchungen sind durch den hohen zeitlichen und finanziellen Aufwand kaum zu realisieren. Die Fernerkundung bietet daher eine kostengünstige und zeitsparende Alternative. In dieser Hausarbeit werden die verschieden Ansätze zur Erfassung der Bodenfeuchte mit den Methoden der Fernerkundung erläutert. Dem gehen zunächst eine Definition des Begriffs Bodenfeuchte, sowie einige Anmerkungen zu den konventionellen Messmethoden dieses Umweltparameters voraus. Der Mikrowellenfernerkundung kommt bei der Ermittlung der Bodenfeuchte eine besondere Bedeutung zu, so dass sich die Beispiele zur Anwendung der Fernerkundungsmethoden im (letzten Teil der Arbeit) auf diesen Wellenlängenbereich beziehen.
