Bodelschwinghsche Anstalten von Bethel, 1971. Ein Haus der Männer-Psychiatrie. Gro e Schlafsäle mit Türen und Fenstern, die nur mit einem "Drücker" zu öffnen sind. Ein Arzt ist noch für ca. 120 Patienten zuständig; ohne Hilfe von Psychologen oder Sozialarbeitern. An einem Tag, der wie jeder andere begonnen hat, wird der 14-jährige Schüler Tomas Graben eingeliefert. Er ist der jüngste Patient im Haus. Am ersten Tag darf er sich entscheiden, zwischen "Mehrbett-" oder "Einzelzimmer". Er gerät so auf eine Station der Dauerpatienten, mit, wie ihm eine Pfleger erklärt: "... den schlimmsten Fällen von ganz Bethel!" Zum "Patientenobjekt" degradiert, erlebt er die ärztlich verordnete Gewalt. Eine längere Patientenlaufbahn hätte so beginnen können, aber Tomas findet einen Weg ... Doch es bleibt die Frage nach dem: WARUM? Von Anfang an spannend und bewegend zu lesen. Ein Buch, das der damaligen Psychiatrie einen Spiegel vorhält.

Geboren 1956 in Bielefeld. Ohne Vater aufgewachsen. Die ersten Lebensjahre sind glücklich. Dann Sekten-, Psychiatrie- und Heimerfahrung (ehemaliges Heimkind). Mit 14 und mit 16 Jahren Patient der von Bodelschwinghschen Anstalten (Stiftung) von Bethel. Die Mutter lässt ihn ohne jede Erklärung oder Vorwarnung einweisen. Er lebt für insgesamt ein Jahr in einem Schlafsaal der Männerpsychiatrie mit 16 Betten und Patienten im Alter von 14 bis 70 Jahren. Nach der Entlassung nie wieder in psychiatrischer Behandlung. Nachfolgend lebt er für 2 Jahre in einem Heim für "schwer Erziehbare" in Freistatt. Obwohl ihm ein Arzt aus Bethel bescheinigt, er werde nie einen Hauptschulabschluss schaffen, mehrere Schulabschlüsse, Ausbildung und ein abgeschlossenes Studium.
