(Knight, 2002, S. 122 nach Salmon, 2003). Seit dem ersten Einsatz von E-Learning-Angeboten wurden hohe Erwartungen sowohl im Unternehmens- als auch im universitären Kontext an diese neue Form des Lernens gestellt. So sollte beispielsweise durch die Möglichkeit, nun zeit- und ortsunabhängig zu lernen, die Inhalte teilweise selbst auszuwählen sowie Ergebnisse mit anderen zu teilen, die Lerneffektivität, aber auch die Lernmotivation der Teilnehmer gesteigert werden. Zunächst wurden jedoch viele dieser Erwartungen nicht erfüllt und es kamen stattdessen neue Probleme hinzu, wie "das Sich-Verlieren im Informationsraum ("Lost in Hyperspace"), die kognitive Überlastung von Lernenden durch die Vielfalt und Komplexität bereits stehender Informationen, Lernmöglichkeiten und technischer Mittel ("Cognitive load") sowie die vielfach noch fehlende Kompetenz, die neuen Medien effektiv für das Lernen zu nutzen." (Tergan, 2004, S.132). Mit zunehmender Erfahrung stellt man fest, dass das blo e Bereitstellen neuer Medien als nicht ausreichend für einen erfolgreichen Einsatz computergestützter bzw. netzgestützter Lernkontexte war (Schiersmann, 2007) und die Qualität von derartigen Lernangeboten nicht per se zugeschrieben werden kann, sondern ma geblich von ihren Beteiligten abhängt (Kerres, 2001a). Viele Teilnehmer empfinden virtuelle Lernumgebungen ohne einen "human supporter" (Salmon, 2003) befremdlich. Es zeigt sich somit, dass tatsächlich traditionelle Lehrformen wie das Bereitstellen einer Betreuungsperson notwendig sind, denn Lernen mit Neuen Medien entfaltet erst dann seine Stärken, wenn innerhalb der virtuellen Lernumgebung Menschen zu Rate gezogen werden können (Hesse, 2009).
