Nach Klärung der Definitionsmerkmale von Virtuellen Unternehmen werden zentrale Charakteristika dieser Kooperationsform aufgezeigt und die verbreitetsten wissenschaftlichen Konzepte und Ansätze vorgestellt. Im Anschluss an die Diskussion rechtlicher Gesichtspunkte und Unklarheiten schlie t das Kapitel mit drei Beispielen realer, überaus erfolgreicher Virtueller Unternehmen. Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit den technologischen Aspekten der Kooperation in der operativen Phase, der Phase der eigentlichen Zusammenarbeit. Zunächst werden ausgewählte Formate, Standards und Protokolle, die für den Einsatz in Virtuellen Unternehmen geeignet erscheinen, in ihrer grundsätzlichen Funktionsweise beschrieben. Der Schwerpunkt der getroffenen Auswahl liegt auf neueren Entwicklungen, die auf der Extensible Markup Language (XML) basieren. Die Eignung für Virtuelle Unternehmen wird jeweils anhand eines Anforderungsprofils, das auf den Erkenntnissen aus dem ersten Teil aufbaut, überprüft. Zum Abschluss des Kapitels werden ausgewählte Technologien (Workflow Management Systeme, Groupware, B2B Integration-Lösungen und Grid Computing) im Hinblick auf ihre Einsatzmöglichkeiten in Virtuellen Unternehmen charakterisiert. Das abschlie ende Fazit stellt zusammenfassend dar, wie sich das Konzept des Virtuellen Unternehmens seit seiner Entstehung entwickelt hat und wie parallel dazu die technologischen Realisierungsmöglichkeiten zugenommen haben.
