In der Geschichtswissenschaft werden sie neben Film- und Tonmaterial verstärkt verwendet, um die traditionellen schriftlichen Quellen zu ergänzen. Daher werden sie auch für Archive interessanter. Aufgrund der immer besser und einfacher gewordenen Technik, sind auch Fotografien mittlerweile zu einem Massenmedium geworden, was eine vollständige Übernahme unmöglich macht. Wolfgang HESSE beklagte 1997, dass Fotografien häufig in Archiven und in der historischen Forschung unterschätzt und vernachlässigt werden und nennt sie "Stiefkind der Archive". Bereits ab 2004 ist eine verstärkte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Bewertung von Fotobeständen zu erkennen. Trotzdem sind diese Arbeiten eher selten im Vergleich zu der Vielzahl an Literatur über allgemeine Bewertung im Archiv sowie zur Lagerung und Erhaltung von Fotobeständen. Nicht jede Fotografie rechtfertigt die Kosten und den Aufwand für ihre Lagerung und Restauration. Aus diesem Grund versuchen einige Autoren Kriterien zu erarbeiten, die spezifisch auf diese Quellengattung angewandt werden können. Die Bewertung von Fotobeständen wird in der theoretischen Diskussion häufig vernachlässigt, obwohl das Problem im Archivalltag bereits eine Rolle spielt, da Archivare in ihrer Ausbildung meist nicht lernen mit diesem neuartigen Archivgut umzugehen. In dieser Arbeit wird analysiert, welche Bewertungskriterien theoretisch auf Fotobestände angewandt werden können und ob neue erstellt werden müssen oder Kriterien von schriftlichen Akten übernommen werden können. Zunächst werden daher allgemeine Bewertungskriterien für schriftliche Akten ermittelt und der Bewertungsvorgang vorgestellt. Danach werden Fotografien als Archivalien vorgestellt und Bewertungskriterien erarbeitet.
