Les francs-macons, influences par la philosophie des Lumieres, s'essaient aussi a une entreprise nouvelle au Proche-Orient: le dialogue entre les religions mais aussi la rencontre de la foi et de l'esprit laique. Beyrouth apparait alors, en cette seconde moitie du xixe siecle et jusqu'a la veille de la Grande Guerre, comme le ferment d'une esperance. Perdure-t-elle aujourd'hui ?Said Chaaya est historien du Proche-Orient, docteur en histoire contemporaine de l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, EPHE-Sorbonne, Paris. Ses recherches portent sur l'histoire intellectuelle et politique du xixe siecle dans le monde arabe, notamment sur la province ottomane de Syrie. Il est rattache au CNRS-GSRL, Groupe Societes Religions Laicites. Membre de plusieurs societes savantes La societe historique libanaise, Societe libanaise pour les etudes ottomanes et la Middle East Studies Association), il a enseigne un an a UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) et a organise un important colloque pour le 300e anniversaire de la Franc-maconnerie moderne.
