Dieses Buch, der Katalog der Bibliothek der Mennonitengemeinde zu Hamburg und Altona, ist der vorläufige Endpunkt einer langen Entwicklung. Die Pastoren der jungen Mennonitengemeinde in der kleinen Stadt Altona haben damals (seit 1601) selbstverständlich Bücher besessen und flei ig benutzt. Sie haben auch Bücher weiter gesammelt und ihre Bibliotheken ihren nachfolgenden Pastorenkollegen hinterlassen. Durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch kam eine stattliche Zahl von Büchern zusammen, die aber auch regelmä ig durch Feuer, Feuchte, Vernachlässigung, Krieg und sogar Verkauf vermindert wurde. Bis Anfang der 1970er Jahre wurde der Bestand auf dem Dachboden der Gemeinde gelagert. Die Erinnerungen von Elke Foth (in diesem Band zu finden) stellen dar, wie ihr Mann, Pastor Peter J. Foth, die Bücher vom Dachboden geholt und auf Regalen im jetzigen Bibliotheksraum aufgestellt hat. In den 1990er Jahren wurde von Kirchenrat dem Verfasser dieses Vorwortes die Aufgabe übertragen, die Bücher zu sortieren, zu ordnen und zu katalogisieren. Dieser Katalog stellt jetzt einen Gro teil des jetzigen Bestands der Bibliothek dar. Jeder Bibliothekskatalog will informieren. Interessierte wollen wissen welche Bücher von welchen Autoren in der Bibliothek zu finden sind, und welche Ausgaben dieser Bücher auf den Regalen stehen. Viele wollen auch bibliographische Details in Erfahrung bringen. Wie jeder Bibliothekskatalog auch, will unser Katalog in diesen Punkten so vollständig wie möglich informieren. Zu diesem Zweck ist dieser Katalog in zwei Teile geteilt. Zuerst kommt eine alphabetisch nach den Autorennamen sortierte Liste der Bücher. Dieser Teil des Katalogs wird logischerweise von Interessierten konsultiert, die bestimmte Werke von bestimmten Verfassern suchen. Ein weiterer Teil des Katalogs listet die Bücher nach den Signaturen der einzelnen Werke. Diese Liste ergibt dann eine Sortierung der Titel nach den Sachgebieten des Bestands. Rudolf Dück Sawatzky: Rudolf Dück Sawatzky wurde 1951 in Filadelfia, Kolonie Fernheim, Paraguay geboren. Nach der deutschen Schule in Filadelfia kam er 1970 nach Hamburg, um eine Ausbildung als Buchhandels- und Verlagskaufmann abzuschließen. Danach spezialisierte er sich als führende Fachkraft für den fremdsprachigen (größtenteils Englisch) Buchimport in Deutschland.
