Magisterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 2,0, Philipps-Universit�t Marburg (Institut f�r Anglistik und Amerikanistik / FB 10), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In dieser Arbeit werden Strategien der Kontrolle und �berwachung in drei klassischen Dystopien der englischen Literatur erforscht. Am ergiebigsten wird die �berwachung in den modernen englischen Dystopien thematisiert. Der Erforschung der Kontrollstrategien in dieser Arbeit liegen Herbert George Wells' The Time Machine (1895), Aldous Leonard Huxleys Brave New World (1932) und George Orwells Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) zugrunde da sie die �berwachungsthematik besonders pr�gnant illustrieren und sich von der utopischen Tradition abgrenzen. Meine These lautet, dass die ausgew�hlten Dystopien als Archetypen der Dystopie bezeichnet werden k�nnen, da sie gattungshistorisch bedeutsam sind. Bez�glich der �berwachung wird die These untersucht, dass BNW eine latente Kontrolle thematisiert, mittels derer der Weltstaat eine bessere Welt vort�uscht, die faktisch die B�rger versklavt, wohingegen die Partei in 1984 eine terroristische und sichtbare �berwachung illustriert und Macht zum Selbstzweck aus�bt. Bez�glich TM wird die These diskutiert, dass TM keine vors�tzliche Kontrolle wie in BNW und 1984, sondern eine auf evolution�rer Basis fu ende �berwachung veranschaulicht, demzufolge der Mensch nicht die Krone der Sch�pfung bleiben muss. Bez�glich der Sexualit�t wird die These untersucht, dass in BNW und 1984 Sexualit�t als Unterdr�ckungsmittel beansprucht wird, wohingegen Sexualit�t in TM nicht als Kontrollinstanz, sondern der nat�rlichen Selektion dient. Im zweiten Kapitel dieser Arbeit wird die Utopie als Gattung definiert und die Dystopie als auch die SF von der Utopie abgegrenzt, wobei erkl�rt wird, warum BNW und 1984 als Dystopien und TM dagegen sowohl als SF als auch als Dystopie gelten kann. Im 3., 4. und 5. Kapitel werden die Kontrollstrategien in TM, BNW und

Oliver Baum, 1979 in Hamburg geboren, studierte Anglistik Literaturwissenschaft, Amerikanistik und Europäische Ethnologie und absolvierte eine Ausbildung zum staatlich geprüften Fremdsprachenkorrespondenten/ Europasekretär. Er arbeitete in einem Verlag, in Redaktionen, in einer Musikagentur sowie als ehrenamtlicher Übersetzer und jobbte mehrere Jahre in einem Supermarkt an der Kasse. Neben wissenschaftlichen Essays und diversen Texten schreibt er vor allem Lyrik und auch Prosa. "Krähen im Feuerwind" ist sein erster Gedichtband. Oliver Baum lebt derzeit in Berlin und arbeitet an weiteren Lyrik- und Prosaprojekten.
