Bilingualismus oder - vereinfacht ausgedrückt - Zweisprachigkeit ist in der heutigen Gesellschaft durchaus keine Seltenheit mehr, sondern hat sich im Laufe der Jahre unter anderem durch zunehmende Migration zur Norm entwickelt, so dass das Thema verstärkt in den Fokus der Öffentlichkeit gerückt ist. Auf jene Entwicklung Bezug nehmend, beschäftigt sich dieses Buch zunächst allgemein mit dem Thema Zweiprachigkeit, indem versucht wird, eine Eingrenzung des Begriffs "Bilingualismus" vorzunehmen. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Begriffe Sprachkompetenz und Sprachgebrauch eingegangen, welche die Basis zweier Ansätze hinsichtlich dieses Phänomens bilden. Neben einer Begriffsbestimmung soll darüber hinaus dargestellt werden, inwiefern bilinguale Sprecher klassifiziert werden können. Zum besseren Verständnis der Zweisprachigkeit werden des Weiteren grundlegende Informationen zur Sprachentwicklung geliefert. In diesem Zusammenhang werden monolinguale und bilinguale Sprecher bezüglich der Vorgänge im Gehirn miteinander verglichen sowie die Frage diskutiert, ob es ein optimales Alter zum Erlernen einer zweiten Sprache gibt und was es mit der Diskussion um die "kritischen Periode" auf sich hat. Im Anschluss daran wird auf den Schwerpunkt des Buches - nämlich den frühen Zweitspracherwerb bei Kindern - eingegangen. Zunächst steht dabei der Erstspracherwerb sowohl als Grundlage des Zweitspracherwerbs, aber auch als Vergleichsmöglichkeit im Mittelpunkt. Davon ausgehend wird einerseits der natürliche Bilingualismus im Rahmen der Familie und andererseits der künstliche Bilingualismus in einer Institution vorgestellt und auf diese Formen einflussnehmende Faktoren behandelt, die in der Ausübung der zweisprachigen Erziehung bedeutsam sind. Gerade in Bezug auf die Praxis ist es letztendlich von besonderer Bedeutung, den frühen Zweitspracherwerb in der öffentlichen Diskussion zu betrachten und die weit verbreiteten positiven und negativen (Vor-)Urteile aufzuzeigen sowie die Weiterentwic
