Drawing on more than three decades of teaching experience, Roger Miesfeld and Megan McEvoy created a book that is both a learning tool for students and a teaching tool for instructors--one that delivers exceptionally readable explanations, stunning graphics, and rigorous content. Relevant everyday biochemistry examples make clear why biochemistry matters in a way that develops students' knowledge base and critical thinking skills. The second edition includes exciting new Your Turn critical thinking pedagogy, a thoughtful balance of biology and chemistry, a compelling ebook featuring 3D molecular images, videos, animations, and more.

McEvoy, Megan M.: - Megan McEvoy is a professor in the Institute for Society & Genetics and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research for the past two decades has been focused on how organisms maintain suitable levels of metal ions while avoiding potentially toxic effects. As a broadly trained protein biochemist, Professor McEvoy explores structure-function details of the metal-ion detoxification proteins to gain a molecular-level understanding of these systems. Professor McEvoy is particularly enthusiastic about mentoring and working with diverse undergraduate students. In addition to classroom teaching and training of numerous undergraduates in her own lab, she spends a significant amount of time working with STEM students from underrepresented backgrounds who aim to become leaders in the scientific workforce. She directs a training program for undergraduate students in the biomedical sciences and codirects the Center for Opportunity to Maximize Participation, Access and Student Success in the Life Sciences. After serving as associate dean for Undergraduate Education in the Life Sciences, she now serves as chair of the Academic Senate at UCLA.?Professor McEvoy received her BA degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her PhD in chemistry from the University of Oregon. She started as a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics at the University of Arizona in 2001, then joined the faculty at UCLA in 2016.

Miesfeld, Roger L.: - Roger L Miesfeld is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Professor Miesfeld's research focus for over 35 years has been on regulatory mechanisms governing signal transduction in eukaryotic cells. For much of this time, his lab investigated steroid hormone signaling in human disease models, primarily cancer (leukemia and prostate cancer) and asthma. His research group also discovered novel biochemical processes that regulate metabolic regulation of blood meal metabolism and eggshell development in Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit the dengue and Zika viruses. Professor Miesfeld has taught a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and medical school biochemistry courses over the past 30-plus years. He currently teaches undergraduate biochemistry using both a hybrid class model for in-person courses and a fully online format. He has authored two other textbooks, Applied Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry: A Short Course, and served five years as the Chemistry & Biochemistry department head at the University of Arizona. Professor Miesfeld received his BS and MS degrees in cell biology from San Diego State University and his PhD in biochemistry from Stony Brook University. He was a Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral Fellow and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, before becoming a faculty member at the University of Arizona in 1987.
