L'exploitation des minerais de phosphate, et de calcaire se fait à ciel ouvert au sud-est du Togo entrainant une agression visuelle paysagère. Les opérations d'extraction de ces minerais laissent à l'abandon d'importants terrils en arrière du front d'exploitation, livrés à une régénération naturelle lente et incertaine. Face à cette situation plusieurs questions se posent par rapport à la restauration de ces milieux fortement perturbés. Par une approche phyto-écologique, la flore, la végétation et la dynamique végétale de ces carrières de phosphates et de calcaire ont été étudiées afin de fournir des informations à leur gestion durable. Trois séries évolutives ont été mises en évidence dans les carrières de phosphate contre deux dans celles des calcaires. La mise en évidence de ces séries repose sur des méthodes statistiques et une caractérisation des groupes de relevés végétaux. Ces séries montrent une tendance vers la colonisation des carrières par des espèces forestières dont la flore est en majorité celle qu'on rencontre dans les îlots forestiers du sud du Togo. Le livre dans sa dernière partie propose des stratégies de restauration de ces sites miniers.
