Durch juristische Mittel wie Patentrechte und Copyrights treiben Industrienationen viele südliche Länder in tiefe Abhängigkeit, indem sie traditionelles geistiges Eigentum der indigenen Bevölkerung rauben und damit enorme Profite erzielen. Gegenüber mächtigen multinationalen Wissenschaftskonzernen haben verhältnismä ig kleine Forschungseinrichtungen in weniger entwickelten Staaten wenig Chance, ihre Innovationen zu vermarkten, finanzielle Nachteile, die die wissenschaftliche Arbeit erheblich einschränken. Weite Teile der bäuerlichen und indigenen Bevölkerung dieser Länder sind von globalen biotechnologischen Konzernen vollkommen abhängig, da sich diese durch gentechnische Veränderungen den jährlichen Verkauf von Saatgut und Düngemitteln an BäuerInnen der Dritten Welt sichern. Das enorme Ungleichgewicht der Machtverhältnisse im wissenschaftlichen und ökonomischen Bereich zwischen Erster und Dritter Welt, stellt die Auswirkungen der Ausbeutung südlicher Länder während des Kolonialismus dar und wird in Form eines Biokolonialismus weitergeführt.
