Hierzu soll zunächst der Lebensraum Ozean und die dort herrschenden Umweltbedingungen dargestellt werden, um dann die ökologische Relevanz der Biolumineszenz in der Tiefsee aufzuzeigen. In Kapitel 3 sollen danach grundlegende Charakteristika der marinen Biolumineszenz, ihre chemischen Grundlagen und Formen sowie mögliche Kontrollmechanismen erläutert werden. Ebenso sollen hier wesentliche Erkenntnisse der Forschung zum evolutionären Ursprung der Biolumineszenz beleuchtet werden. Im Anschluss daran erfolgt eine Zusammenfassung ausgewählter Stämme, um so die enorme Verbreitung biolumineszenter Systeme zu verdeutlichen. In Kapitel 5 sollen dann die aus den zahlreichen und vielfältigen Adaptationen der marinen Organismen hervorgehenden Funktionen von Biolumineszenz vorgestellt werden. Im darauffolgenden Teil soll die Bedeutung biolumineszenter Substrate und Enzyme für die biochemische Forschung und mögliche Anwendungsgebiete am Beispiel von GFP, dem grün fluoreszierenden Protein, erläutert werden. Da das Thema der Biolumineszenz zahlreiche Verbindungen mit der Chemie, Physik, Geographie und Biologie aufweist, soll zuletzt die Behandlung biolumineszenter Prozesse und Organismen sowie des Lebensraumes Tiefsee in der Schule dargelegt werden.
