On the morning of September 8, 1905, an earthquake destroyed Martirano - an ancient hilltop village in Calabria, southern Italy, with two thousand years of history. Two years later, where a forest of oaks and chestnuts had stood, a new town rose from the ground. And in 1929, that town did something no other community in Italy had ever done: it changed its name to honor the strangers who had rebuilt it.

Born Twice is the first comprehensive account of the founding of Martirano Lombardo - a story of catastrophe, solidarity, and identity that spans two millennia and crosses the length of Italy.

Drawing on diocesan and municipal archives, engineering reports, family memories, and the records of the Pro Calabria Committee - the Milanese philanthropic organization that financed and designed the new town - this book reconstructs an extraordinary episode in Italian history: the night of the earthquake, the organized relief effort, the decision to relocate the entire community to a new site, the urban plan drawn by three Milanese engineers, and the decades of conflict and reconciliation between the old village and the new town.

But Born Twice is also a book about the present. Today, Martirano Lombardo counts fewer than a thousand residents. The community that survived an earthquake now faces a slower catastrophe: depopulation. This book is a contribution to the choice of whether to survive it.
