Ziel ist es, den physikalischen Begriffen eine vor-theoretische Gewissheit zu verleihen, indem diese auf nicht physikalische Begriffe zurückgeführt werden. Anders ausgedrückt sollen die physikalischen Begriffe durch eine Metaphysik, die vor der Beobachtung der Bewegung, also vor jeder Physik und Empirie steht, auf eine Grundlage gestellt werden, welche aus der reinen Vernunft abgeleitet werden kann. Diese Grundlage soll der Physik Newtons schlie lich apodiktische Gewissheit verleihen, da sie sich, nach Kant, auf Begriffe a priori berufen kann, also eine externe und nicht nur eine interne Semantik beinhaltet. Hierbei sollen die Axiome der newtonschen Mechanik, namentlich die physikalischen Grö en Masse und Kraft, als Modell dienen. Zum gleichen Zweck führt Kant in den "Metaphysischen Anfangsgründen der Naturwissenschaften" einen Substanzbegriff ein, der mit Newtons Konzept der Masse korreliert. Dieser Substanzbegriff als einer Substanz in der Erfahrung, verbindet ontologische und epistemische Aspekte.
