Broken Circle is a collection of photographs and statements from young adults, 18 to 25, who answered my questions: "How are you impacted by your parents' divorce? How does it affect your perceptions, plans, goals, hopes, and aspirations regarding relationships, commitments, and thinking about your own future marriage and children?" And often the participants commented, "no one has ever asked me." Given the opportunity, this population has poignant, often painful and illuminating observations to share: personal life experience that may help others. Their written statements moved back and forward in time, each one a revelation of the life-altering events and memories before, during, and after their family breakup. The photos and stories in Broken Circle provide intimate insights to help legal and mental health professionals guide their clients toward healthier, happier and more holistic family outcomes. This is not pro or con divorce, but a vehicle to enlighten and inform people who can most benefit by it-the children, their parents, therapists, counselors, the judicial system and academia-to understand the unintentional consequences of the parents' split. Broken Circle offers a powerful, succinct testament as to how young people navigate these complex emotional seas.

Karen Klein is a photographer/visual artist currently living in Sarasota, Florida. She holds an MFA degree in studio arts from the University of Minnesota, where, in 1987, she undertook the photography project that would more than two decades later lead to Broken Circle-Children of Divorce and Separation. After working in the corporate environment until 2007, Klein returned to her art fulltime. Over the years, she evolved her signature approach: long-term projects exploring personal issues of universal import, often including collaboration. Klein's photography invites the viewer in artistically as well as thematically, often alluding to social concerns. Karen Klein's photographs are in many private and public collections, and most recently acquired by the University of Minnesota's Boynton Health Center. She is represented by the State of the Arts Gallery in Sarasota. For more information or to become a Broken Circle project participant, please email: karen@karenklein.com. www.karenklein.com
