La breve y penosa existencia de Christian Dietrich Grabbe (1801-1836), signada por un entorno opresivo y por una condición psicofísica endeble, a menudo estragada por el alcohol, arrojó un saldo poético bastante magro en el aspecto cuantitativo y originalísimo -aunque muy tardíamente reconocido- en el aspecto cualitativo. La decena de piezas dramáticas que alcanzó a componer tan singular autor, de las cuales él mismo vio sólo una estrenada y muchas ni siquiera publicadas (más allá de las que dejó sin concluir y en estado de proyecto), recién comenzaron a causar un cierto impacto cultural con las vanguardias de comienzos del siglo XX, cuando tomaron nota de ellas, por ejemplo, Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) y Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)1. Pues la grandilocuencia y las exageraciones requeridas por el lenguaje y más aún por las tramas de este excéntrico dramaturgo, que con sus excesos y desbordamientos se había propuesto revolucionar ante todo el subgénero del drama histórico (el más cultivado y ensalzado por el teatro alemán de todo el siglo XIX), sólo podían ser del gusto de la cultura modernista, ya divorciada de la sobriedad y las aspiraciones de una representación autodenominada "realista".
Ahora bien, Broma, Sátira, Ironía y Sentido Profundo es una obra de juventud, en tanto fue compuesta a los 21 años, a grandes rasgos puede definirse como el producto de una búsqueda acorde a la breve edad de su creador: una complicada y esmerada broma del estudiante que está poniendo en juego sus conocimientos, sus ideales sociales y su relación con las tradiciones social y mítica, plasmando una creación de múltiples facetas casi imposibles de coordinar, y pese a lo chocante de algunos temas, muy rápida y divertida, una vez que se acepta el carácter de teatro guiñolesco que la caracteriza y le confiere sus rasgos grotescos. La risa que suscita esta pieza, por cierto, no libera al espectador de sus opresiones y angustias, sino que le hace sentir el mundo como algo perverso e incomprensible; en una carta a su amigo Kettembeil, el propio dramaturgo predecía sobre ella que "a todos les suscitará una risa estridente, pero en el fondo sólo una risa de la desesperación".
