Bulldog Five, a rundown, underfinanced and formerly secret military facility is the last known remaining defence against the violent ambition of an unknown Colonel Alan Harborne.
In a small American town the previous year, an indebted security guard had been bribed to provide a rat infected with Compound 110A for the Chinese Government. Unknown to the Chinese, the security guard had been bitten by the rodent, immediately becoming Patient Zero of what would be christened the Zombie Virus. The name was admittedly inaccurate as the victim never dies, but the name great the gravitas the population needed to understand the ramifications..
In humans, Compound 110A, had been originally designed to create super-soldiers. Once exposed, a human would be infected within 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, the Virus could also be spread by breathing the same air as an infected victim. While the incubation period was slower - between 3 to 12 hours - the victim would succumb to the Virus without fail.
As the infection took hold in the victim's bloodstream, they would feel a confidence and euphoria that was far more intoxicating than any recreational drug they might have taken in the past. The reasoning centre of their brain would quickly be turned off, as basic desires would become more important than empathy.
The security guard had gone on on to stab a colleague through his ears with a breadknife as the man slept, while retaining enough coherent thought to frame another colleague. Then, wishing to celebrate and find the sustenance that his body was suddenly craving, he made his way to his favourite brothel and happily began to devour half the staff.
He was found contentedly tucking into an unfortunate rent-boy's liver with the infection spreading first into the arresting police officers and then into the general population. In an attempt to prevent the spread to the unaffected portions of his country, the American President ordered the use of nuclear weapons, directed onto the central states of the United States of America along a line following the Mississippi as it tracked north towards the Great Lakes. The attempt was an abject failure, as all control was subsequently lost within the mainland United States.
Countries around the world began to stop communicating, one after another. Even China, the duplicitous instigator of the crisis, suddenly stopped all communication from its densely packed eastern coastal area. A huge exodus of survivors pursued by hungry Virus victims began flooding from China over the Indian and Russian borders. The Indians responded with bullets whereas the Russians used nuclear weapons, resulting in both the Russian and Chinese governments disappearing under one another's respective mushroom clouds.
Now, a year later, The United Kingdom has also been hit by several nuclear missiles, while an undeclared civil war had commenced between the Bulldog Bases.
- BULLDOG ONE, based below Whitehall in London, Bulldog One was the premier base. Designed as a centre of government in times of emergencies. Presumed destroyed in Book One. - BULLDOG TWO, the next base in terms of importance, the base commander was usurped in Book One and now is aligned with the enemy. - BULLDOG THREE, positioned to guard the western approaches, the base is an unknown entity after a failed uprising. - BULLDOG FOUR, the most secretive of all the bases. It was here that Colonel Alan Harborne launched a audacious coup. Since his later attempt to usurp power from Bulldog Five, Harborne agreed to an armistice, to last just one year. - BULLDOG FIVE, constructed under the remote Isle of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, this base was the runt of the Bulldog litter. It was at this base a resistance to Harborne was organised by the former (now Colonel) Major Michael Morgan, Triple M to his men.
