Burning Daylight is a novel written by Jack London, published in 1910. The story is set in the Yukon during the gold rush and follows the life of a man named Elam Harnish, also known as Burning Daylight. Harnish is a successful businessman who made his fortune in the gold fields and is now looking for a new challenge. He decides to invest in a steamship company and becomes involved in a power struggle with his business partners. Along the way, he falls in love with a woman named Dede Mason and must navigate the complexities of their relationship. The novel explores themes of wealth, power, love, and the pursuit of happiness. It is a classic example of early 20th-century American literature and is considered one of London's most popular works.1910. American writer (real name John Griffith London). London grew up in poverty, earning a living through various legal and illegal means. He was a sailor and took part in the Klondike gold rush. These experiences provided much of the material for his works and contributed to his becoming a socialist. Burning Daylight was London's best selling book during his lifetime. The book begins on the Klondike, as the hero-nicknamed Burning Daylight-becomes the most successful entrepreneur during the Alaskan Gold Rush. Having achieved fame and fortune, he heads to the States looking for new worlds to conquer. But, he's cheated out of his fortune by the crooks of Wall Street. Taking a page from their book, he too becomes a scoundrel when it comes to doing business. His travels then take him to California where he sees potential in the town of Oakland. He buys property, sets up utilities and public transportation systems through overbearing and shady tactics. He becomes self-indulgent with drink and food. And then, for the first time, he falls in love. The story ends with the moral of how a good woman can turn a bad man around. Adventure, dirty business deals and love wrapped into one good read.
