Une histoire plus que mill�naire depuis la fondation par Constantin d'une nouvelle Rome, romaine par ses institutions, grecque par son peuplement, sa langue, sa culture.
Pourtant l'histoire de Byzance ne se confond pas avec le destin d'un Empire aux grandes ambitions mais aux faibles moyens, m�diterran�en sous Justinien, eurasiatique � son apog�e, ramass� sur Constantinople et le P�loponn�se � la veille de sa chute sous les coups des Ottomans et des Latins.
Malgr� de nombreuses aventures guerri�res, la seule v�ritable expansion que connut l'Empire byzantin est de nature pacifique et religieuse; celle de la culture orthodoxe, d'une id�ologie qui, autour de l'empereur puis dans le sillage de l'�glise, irrigue au Moyen �ge non seulement Byzance, mais aussi la majeure partie des pays slaves, au premier rang desquels figure la Russie. Permanences et mutations qui vont donner naissance au mythe de Moscou, troisi�me Rome, et contribuer � fa�onner les bases �conomiques et sociales mais surtout les mentalit�s sp�cifiques de l'Europe orientale.
Au carrefour de l'Orient et de l'hell�nisme s'est donc d�velopp�e une civilisation d'une richesse �blouissante qui fascinera les Occidentaux; qu'il s'agisse des ic�nes ou des miniatures qui illustrent les manuscrits, des innombrables �glises que d�corent fresques et mosa�ques, cet art �voque le sacr� sous un aspect � la fois solennel et vraisemblable, mais aussi les aspects les plus divers de la vie quotidienne.
On comprendra qu'un soin tout particulier ait �t� apport�, hors des sentiers battus, � l'illustration de ce livre.
