In May 1969, Timothy Leary's conviction for possession of marihuana was overturned by the U.S Supreme Court. He had been sentenced to 30-years imprisonment and fined $40,000 for less than a quarter of an ounce. As a result of a campaign on behalf of three small children, the UK Government finally passed legislation in November 2018, which allowed the use of cannabis-based products for medicinal purposes. This book examines those cases and the reefer madness campaign of the 1930's, Nixon's war on drugs, the United Nations efforts to impose world-wide prohibition, dagga smoking in 19th century South Africa, the Yarkand charas trade and the Indian Hemp Commission of 1893. It also considers studies carried out by the U.S military in the Panama Canal Zone, the Shafer Commission, the Le Dain Commission and the Baroness Wooten report of 1968. It also explores the latest medical research, investigating its use as an effective treatment for a wide variety of illnesses, as well as the dangers associated with specialised strains of skunk. It begins where it should, acknowledging its social and spiritual roots in India, where it has been used for thousands of years, as well as its role in Jamaica, where it has been adopted by those who follow the Rastafari faith.
