Caregivers in the Home: Their Portraits and Stories, A Labor of Love documents the experience of in-home caregivers, holistic and unadorned. Their portraits reverberate with visual intimacy, revealing their strength, angst, courage, and love. Their stories reveal their essential attributes: kindness, compassion, faith, hope, autonomy, and advocacy.

Day in, day out, together or separated, these caregivers focused on keeping their loved ones safe and secure. Well-thought-out plans for a loved one were disturbed in unexpected ways, and there was no such thing as a normal daily routine. Hope and aspirations made a difference in their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Empathic relationships with clinicians validated caregiver commitment and advanced the goals of care.

Caregivers in the home go largely unnoticed, and the care they provide is often underappreciated by family members, clinicians, and, on occasion, their loved one. The call to serve is intense. How do they stay with it?

Geller, D. Michael: - David Michael Geller is a caregiver. He has supported caregivers as a social worker, a physician, and a photographer. He is a recipient of the 2012 David J. Levinson Award and 2014 Kenneth Fulp Memorial Award. His caregiver portraits and stories were on exhibit in 2019 at the Chrysler Museum of Art, in 2024 at the Duke Caregiver Community Event, and in other venues. His work was presented at Grand Rounds, UT Southwestern Medical Center, and was featured by The Virginian-Pilot, the Daily Press, the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitation Services, and in the education of medical students, residents, and post graduate trainees. He has served as president of the Board of Arts for Learning, Virginia.
