Caroline of Ansbach was not born to rule Britain. She was a German princess, raised in the courts of the Holy Roman Empire, shaped by Protestant politics, intellectual culture, dynastic insecurity, and the hard lessons of royal survival.

Yet when she became the wife of George Augustus of Hanover, the future George II, her life became tied to one of the most important political transitions in British history.

The Hanoverians inherited Britain because they were Protestant and lawful, not because they were loved. George I seemed foreign and distant. George II was proud, irritable, and difficult to manage. Robert Walpole, Britain's dominant minister, understood Parliament and finance, but needed royal confidence to survive.

Caroline stood at the centre of them all.

As Princess of Wales, she learned how court, family, opposition, and succession worked in a new dynasty still haunted by Jacobite hopes. As queen consort, she helped persuade George II to retain Walpole, giving the new reign political stability when it might have opened in anger and upheaval. Through her court, she gave Hanoverian monarchy intelligence, dignity, Protestant seriousness, and a more acceptable public face.

But Caroline's power was not gentle in every direction. Her bitter relationship with Frederick, Prince of Wales, exposed the darker side of dynastic politics. She could mediate between king and minister, but not between father and son. She strengthened the monarchy, but left the royal family divided.
