The delightful images in this coloring book present the early folk drawings of Native New Mexican potter Jerry Hopkins Velarde. They tell a story of the place she is from, of her experiences as a child, as a woman, and as an artist

Jerry Hopkins Velarde is a native Northern New Mexican raised in Velarde and Albuquerque. For many years she has worked as an artist in clay and as an educator. She also loves and plays traditional music. As soon as she could hold a stick, Jerry drew in the dirt. Later, with pencil and crayons, she created her own coloring books: squiggles, mandalas, heart-bodied girls with big faces, long hair, and dancing skirts, stick arms; animals, trees with long dancing roots, landscapes, villages, clouds, dream monsters, whatever was important and made an impression on her. She apprenticed to a master clay artist and began to draw on clay while learning the technique of throwing, trimming, experimenting with shape, adding handles and lids, adding color glazes and design, firing using electric and hand-built gas kilns, keeping a studio, going to shows, and marketing her work. For forty-five years she has made and carved clay pots. Several years ago, Jerry learned the traditional New Mexican art of colcha embroidery. Using woven fabric and natural dyed yarn from churro sheep, she adds color to her drawings to create texture and movement, much as she does in clay.
