In Casting About you will discover seven chapters of poetry each with a unique theme. All together, 100 poems comprise this book speaking to John's long and full tenure here on earth. As a scientist and physician, a naturalist, a father and husband, a fisherman, a storyteller, and as a man of deep spiritual faith, John has found a way to share his memorable poetic visions with us. And he has done so during a late life stage characterized by wisdom and autonomy; this collection of poems portraying his writing efforts between the ages of 81 to 84.

John R. McDonough is a native of Tacoma, WA, and a graduate of Seattle University (B.S.), Creighton University (M.D., and M.S. in Physiology), and the University of California at Berkeley (M.P.H. in Epidemiology). He did his post-graduate medical training as an intern at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma, then as a resident in Internal Medicine at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in New Orleans, LA, and finally as a Cardiology Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. He served as a Medical Officer with the U.S. Public Health Service from 1955 to 1975, and also served on the medical staff as Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the University of Washington where he was engaged in teaching and research. He then entered private practice as a cardiologist in Tacoma, retiring in 1998. He has since devoted greater time to family, traveling, fishing, and composing verse. Although he has a lengthy list of professional medical publications, this is his first published book of poetry.
