First published in 1991. The Royal Asiatic Society publishes a journal three times a year and has an annual programme of lectures and seminars. During the century and a half since the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded in 1823, catalogues and lists of the books and manuscripts in its possession have been steadily published. The collection of prints and paintings by both British and Indian artists, however, has been largely neglected. A few of the more attractive oils, watercolours, prints and Indian miniatures had been framed and hung in the Society's rooms, but the main part of the collection had been laid aside in parcels and cupboards and had never been systematically catalogued. This present catalogue of the paintings, drawings and prints in the Royal Asiatic Society has now revealed material of great importance, some of it closely related to material in the India Office.

Raymond Head studied at Darlington College of Arts and the Royal College of Art. He has specialised in the subject of Indian influences on western culture and published a book The Indian Style in 1986. He has lectured widely in Britain and abroad, giving the Sir George Birdwood Memorial Lecture at the Royal Society of Arts in 1987. His writings have been published in numerous magazines and journals and he has broadcast on radio and television. He is a musician.
