Cecilia Valdés, de Cirilo Villaverde, es la novela cubana más importante del siglo XIX. Su título completo es Cecilia Valdés o La Loma del Ángel y se publicó en Nueva York en el año 1882. Per-tenece al movimiento romántico, aunque no está exenta de pinceladas realistas y costumbristas. La novela se estructura en cuatro partes, que abarcan el periodo histórico comprendido entre 1812 y 1831.

El propósito de Villaverde, como él mismo declara, era describir minuciosamente la realidad de la isla, ilustrar los padecimientos de los esclavos y mostrar las distintas clases políticas, sociales y económicas y las terribles lacras que padecían.

El centro argumental de la novela, con tintes folletinescos, es el idilio entre una mestiza de singular belleza, Cecilia Valdés, con aspiraciones de ascender socialmente y frustrada por su condición social, y un joven blanco y rico, Leonardo Gamboa. Alrededor de este eje se desarrollan otras historias y se relatan episodios diversos que dan consistencia narrativa al conjunto. El idilio se resuelve en un trágico desenlace.

Cecilia Valdés es la tragedia del mestizaje, imprescindible en una reflexión sobre los conflictos étnicos de la nación cubana.

La obra de Cirilo Villaverde se enmarca dentro del romanticismo, sin embargo refleja un contexto social y humano que trasciende su época y lo convierte en un autor fundamental del siglo XIX. Los más importantes escritores cubanos de esta época, desde Cirilo Villaverde hasta José Martí, estuvieron involucrados en los movimientos a favor de la independencia.

De hecho, Cecilia Valdés, se concibió bajo el impulso de la libertad de Cuba y el abolicionismo.
