Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Die Erkennung, Entwicklung und Nutzung von Kernkompetenzen ist den vergangenen Jahren weltweit in den strategischen Mittelpunkt der Geschäftsführungen der Wirtschaftsunternehmen gerückt. Die daraus resultierende (Wieder-)Besinnung auf die Konzentration von Kernkompetenzen eines Unternehmens brachte die strategischen Entscheider dazu, einige nicht als Kernprozesse angesehene Funktionen oder Tätigkeiten an Fremdunternehmen auszulagern. Neben zunächst einfachen logistischen Aufgaben standen und stehen dafür bisher vor allem die Funktionen Rechnungswesen, Informationstechnologie und Personalwesen im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sich die Logistik entwickelt und damit auch die Anforderungen an Logistikdienstleister. Die Logistik ist lange keine unterschätzte Funktion mehr, sondern ist mittlerweile schon Teil der Unternehmensstrategie. Aus dem Transportieren eines Gutes von A nach B ist heutzutage eine unternehmensübergreifende Integrations- und Steuerungsfunktion geworden. Auch die Logistikdienstleister haben ständig neue Kompetenzen im logistiknahen Bereich entwickelt, auf die die Unternehmen aus Industrie und Handel vermehrt zugreifen. Ein weiterer Aspekt der Entwicklung ist die Erkenntnis, dass künftig partnerschaftliche Netzwerke zum einen grö ere Vorteile für die beteiligten Unternehmen bringen und zum anderen die Position im harten Wettbewerb verbessern kann. Logistikleistungen und dazu angebotene Mehrwertdienste im Zusammenhang mit einem längerfristigen vertraglichen fixierten Vertrag werden im deutschen Sprachgebrauch als Kontraktlogistik bezeichnet.
