In unserer heutigen Gesellschaft muss sich der Glaube immer mehr beweisen. Religionsunterricht wird als unnötig erachtet, die Lehrer*innen haben immer mehr Probleme den Glauben in Kontakt mit der Lebenswelt der Schüler*innen zu setzen. Dieses Problem existiert nicht erst seit der Jahrtausendwende. Auch schon in den 60ern brachte die erstarkende Säkularisierung Probleme für den Religionsunterricht. Wie sollte man mit Schüler*innen umgehen, die keine christliche Sozialisierung besa en und eher agnostisch oder atheistisch in ihrer Denkweise waren? Die Korrelationsdidaktik schien die Erlösung für den katholischen Religionsunterricht. Ihren Durchbruch erlangte sie in den 60er bis 70er Jahren und wurde ab dann zum didaktischen Leitprinzip im Religionsunterricht. Sie versuchte eine Wechselbeziehung zwischen der Schülerwelt und der christlichen Tradition herzustellen. Später wurde sie jedoch von der Elementarisierung abgelöst, nachdem einige Probleme die Praxisumsetzung der Korrelationsdidaktik erschwerten. Trotzdem hielt sich das Prinzip als eines der Leitprinzipien im Religionsunterricht. Auch noch heute nutzen viele Religionslehrer*innen die Korrelationsdidaktik. In dieser Hausarbeit sollen die Chancen und Grenzen der Korrelationsdidaktik aufgezeigt werden. Dafür werden zunächst das der Korrelationsdidaktik zugrundeliegende systematisch-theologische Prinzip der "Korrelation" erläutert. Beginnend mit Paul Tillich, einem evangelischen Theologen, der Korrelation auch als "Frage-Antwort Geschehen" deutete, weiterführend mit Edward Schillebeeckx, einem katholischen Theologen, der Korrelation eher als gegenseitiges Durchdringen definiert.
