Mangelnde Bildung sowie räumliche und soziale Isolation gehören zur Realität dieser Menschen - so auch bei den San in Namibia. Welche Rolle spielt in diesem Kontext der Ethnotourismus für die San? Kann er helfen, ihr kulturelles Erbe zu bewahren und ihre ökonomische Unabhängigkeit zu fördern, oder beschleunigt er den Ausverkauf ihrer Kultur? Der Ethnotourismus hat sich in den letzten Jahren vom Nischenprodukt zum festen Bestandteil vieler Rundreisen entwickelt. Indigene Völker sind mit ihrem kulturellen Erbe ein wesentlicher Aspekt dieser Entwicklung. Doch Unterdrückung und Vertreibung haben Traumata in vielen indigenen Gemeinschaften ausgelöst, die zu Problemen wie Alkoholismus, Gewalt und Orientierungslosigkeit geführt haben - keine besonders gute Ausgangsposition in der oftmals nur auf Gewinnmaximierung ausgerichteten Tourismusbranche. Für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung ist ein Mitspracherecht der lokalen Bevölkerung an der Tourismusentwicklung unabdingbar. Hier bietet der Community-based Tourism die Möglichkeit, die lokale Bevölkerung mehr in die Planung und Umsetzung einzubeziehen sowie an den Profiten aus dem Tourismus zu beteiligen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden zwei Beispiele des Community-based Tourism bei den San in der Kalahari betrachtet, die abseits der wichtigen Besucherattraktionen und der gro en Touristenströme liegen. Hier versuchen die lokalen Gemeinschaften selbstverwaltete Ethnotourismusprojekte zu etablieren.In Anbetracht der massiven sozialen Probleme und des schlechten Bildungsniveaus stellt dies für die San eine enorme Herausforderung dar - doch es mangelt an wirtschaftli
