Rakesh Kumar was born in May 1974 in the Ganga coastal village of Shivkund in Munger district of Bihar.

His upbringing and education took place in a middle-class farmer family. He received Bachelor of Education from the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University in Bihar. He obtained Honors degree in English Literature in 1995.

Chandrakala: Prem avem Soundarya - Kaavya Sangrah is his first creation.
