In ancient Rome, Aurelius rises from humble beginnings to become a star charioteer, using his skills and cunning to climb the ranks of the city's most popular sport. As he becomes embroiled in the corrupt world of race-fixing and political manipulation, Aurelius catches the attention of powerful figures, including the king's ambitious brother.
Seduced by promises of wealth and influence, Aurelius agrees to participate in a plot to destabilize the kingdom and overthrow the king. However, events take an unexpected turn when the plan succeeds but leads to the rise of a new leader, Augustus, who ushers in an era of reforms and enlightenment. As Rome expands its influence, Aurelius becomes entangled with the Illuminati, a secret society seeking to guide the empire's future. He takes on a protégé, Tiberius, and together they work to spread the Illuminati's influence across the Mediterranean and into Africa. The narrative spans years, following Rome's conquest of new territories, including Egypt and Constantinople. It chronicles the rise of new technologies like the "steam horse" (an early train) and the construction of massive infrastructure projects connecting the empire. Throughout the story, Aurelius grapples with the moral implications of his actions, eventually stepping back from active involvement to start a family. Meanwhile, the Illuminati continues to manipulate events from the shadows, steering Rome towards a grand vision of enlightenment and progress. The book culminates in a period of open Illuminati rule in Africa, the fortification of Constantinople against Ottoman threats, and Rome's transformation under Illuminati guidance. It explores themes of power, corruption, technological progress, and the cost of ambition against the backdrop of an expanding empire. "The Charioteer's Gambit" is a sweeping epic that blends historical fiction with elements of secret societies and alternative history, offering a unique perspective on the rise and transformation of the Roman Empire.• Author(s): Clear | James • Publisher: Penguin • Publisher Imprint: Penguin Random House • Subject: General Books
